Mahjong capers
By SETO KIT YAN

Bosco Wong Chung Chak was the last to find out that he would be making his big screen debut this year. Even fans of the popular Hong Kong TVB actor knew he would be starring in a new movie before he did.

“One day, I was online checking out my forum when I read someone’s entry that said I’d soon be starring in a film. I was surprised because I didn’t know about it at all. I thought it was just a joke,” Wong revealed in a telephone interview from Hong Kong recently.

“Following that, I was at KLIA when a fan told me that I would be appearing in a new movie. I was taken aback. Then my manager, who was standing beside me, confirmed the news. It turned out that he accepted the role to surprise me.”

The 27-year-old actor is making his film debut in The Luckiest Man (Dai Sei Hei in Cantonese). A comedy dealing with favourite Chinese pastime mahjong, it tells of King of Gambling Ho Bit Fai, who has three wives, two sons and one daughter. The wives are all savvy in the martial arts and they use family meal times to exercise their formidable kung fu skills. Their fighting intensifies when the old man brings home his love child Fai, played by Wong.
Co-starring in the movie are Natalis Chan Pak Cheung, Yuen Qiu, Pinky Cheung Man Chi, Monica Chan Fat Yung, Timmy Hung Tin Ming, Danny Chan Kwok Kwan and director Lam Tze Chung himself.
Lam, 32, is perhaps best known worldwide as mo-lei-tau nonsense comedy king Stephen Chow’s sizeable sidekick in movies like Shaolin Soccer and Kungfu Hustle.

This would be the filmmaker’s second movie after his 2006 directorial debut, I’ll Call You (Duk Haan Yum Cha in Cantonese), financed by Andy Lau’s Focus Films as one of six regional Chinese-language film in the regional film project Focus: First Cuts.

Wong said he was currently on the set of HKTVB series Burning Flame 3 (Lit Fo Hung Sum), which is set to run for 30 episodes. He plays firefighter Fong Lee Hon in the third instalment of the popular series. Filming the series at the height of summer gives new meaning to the word firefighting. “The weather’s very hot now in Hong Kong, so it is quite trying.”

Although he has featured in more than 20 TV series, Wong readily admitted that feature filmmaking took some getting used to.

“Television series take longer to film and the filming techniques are very different, so I needed a bit of time to adapt. But, I learnt a lot, particularly about acting.

“The genre is comedy so the fun part about it is that Lek Ko (Chan) and director fatty Chung (Lam) will continuously conjure up fun gags. Lek Ko is really amazing. He’s very up-to-date and refers to current issues.

“I feel everyone should learn to be observant about one’s surroundings and keep up to date with the latest happenings.”

In The Luckiest Man, Wong has to show off some mahjong playing skills. “Mahjong is not something I’m very good at. Fortunately, we had a mahjong sifu on the set to demonstrate the hand flourishes and playing techniques.”
Wong expressed his gratitude to the director and producer Yeung Pan Pan for his movie break. “I’m very grateful to Yeung Pan Pan as she was the one who picked me for the role.

“I’m very lucky to have met director Lam. Not only is he an excellent friend, he has also taught me many things.”
After filming the first movie, Wong expressed keen interest to make further strides into commercial cinema.
“After filming this movie, I discovered filmmaking to be a very enjoyable experience. I’d like to do more movies, even if it means packing my filming schedule and juggling feature films and TV series simultaneously. I’m prepared to put in a lot of hard work.”

The Luckiest Man, distributed by RAM Entertainment, opens in cinemas nationwide today.
